ECT Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules
What are the ECT Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules?
The ECT Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules provide Early Career Teachers (ECTs) with the opportunity to engage in phase-specific and maths-specific professional development. The modules are underpinned by the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework (ITTECF), allowing ECTs to build on their experience as an Initial Teacher Trainee (ITT).
The modules enhance the Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE), by offering professional development that delves into maths pedagogy firmly grounded in the principles of teaching for mastery.
There are six modules in total:
Module 1: High Expectations in Maths
Module 2: How Pupils Learn Maths
Module 3: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics
Module 4: Curriculum Coherence in Mathematics
Module 5: Practice in the Mathematics Classroom
Module 6: Adaptive Teaching in Mathematics
There is one set of modules for primary maths teachers, and another set of modules for secondary maths teachers.
Each module is divided into two or three parts. At the end of each part, ECTs are offered a school-based task designed to support the development of a specific aspect of classroom pedagogy. This includes prompts for discussion with a mentor or another school colleague.
What is the time commitment?
It’s important to note that the Modules are hosted on Elevate (a Learning Management System) and so provide asynchronous learning. This means that ECTs can work on the modules in any order, at their own pace and at a time suited to their schedule; they can do as much or as little as they choose. ECTs are fully in control and there are no deadlines or reminders.
Learning is broken down into approximately 60-minute sections. Each module is approximately three hours of learning, including the completion of interactive tasks during the module. Therefore, to complete all of the modules, the overall time commitment is around 16 hours.
One possible model for ECTs engaging with the modules is:
Year 1: Modules 1 and 2 (approximately six hours)
Year 2: Modules 3 and 4 (approximately five hours)
Year 3: Modules 5 and 6 (approximately five hours)
How do ECTs access the ECT Expertise in Teaching Maths Modules?
ECTs who are participating in SKTM programmes are registered on Elevate. ECTs not participating in the SKTM programme will need to contact their local Maths Hub to request access to the modules.
