National Professional Qualifications
Information for Academic Year 22-23
The DfE has confirmed that ALL NPQs will be free for the next two years for all state-funded schools, without limit as to numbers per school. Independent special schools, PVIs and state-funded nurseries and colleges are also funded.
From autumn 2022, state-funded schools and state-funded 16 to 19 educational settings with 1 to 600 pupils will be paid £200 for each teacher or leader they employ who takes an NPQ.
This year, DfE has moved the first cohort to an October start date. The deadline for application is OCTOBER 10th but if possible, please don’t leave it this late to apply as this is also the date that participants will gain access to the online learning platform. As applications take a few days to process, you will already be playing catchup.

The Application Process
- Please register initially for NPQs HERE.
- Following the brief DfE registration process, applicants will receive a further e-mail from Education Development Trust (EDT). This will come from this email address PortalNoReply@educationdevelopmenttrust.com and may end up in your junk email account, so please keep checking.
- Applicants will need to complete the information below:
- Choose HISP Teaching School Hub as the Delivery Partner
- Choose either October or February as the start date
- Complete questions on why you want to do the course, what you expect to learn and why you have chosen EDT. The first two are to understandably ensure the suitability and commitment of an applicant and should be completed with reasonable thought. The third should only be answered by saying ‘This is the provider that my Teaching School Hub is working with’ and does not require an in-depth answer.
- Please let Caroline Carroll know that you have applied so she can track your application and provide you with any necessary support and guidance. Caroline is our West Sussex Teaching School Hub Associate and is leading on NPQs. She is based at Millais School, Horsham on caroline.carroll@millais.org.uk or 01403 267890
These qualifications have been designed to support teachers and leaders in developing skills in aspects of school leadership and specialist areas of teaching practice. They have been developed through consultation with the education sector and EEF.
The new NPQs support the Department for Education’s Recruitment and Retention Strategy (2019) and the ‘Golden Thread’. They build on evidence already established in the Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework and the Early Career Framework (ECF), and reflect both the Teachers’ Standards and The Headteachers’ Standards.
